Designing Using an Online Hybrid Whiteboard: The Case of SEFCOR

SEFCOR is a manufacturing company using over 20,000 designs that often must be adapted or reworked quickly using teamwork involving contributors working from multiple locations. The company leveraged physical and digital whiteboarding solutions from FlatFrog to solve problems relating to its real-time collaborative design modification challenges.

The challenge of real-time collaborative design

SEFCOR is a well-established company in the manufacturing sector located in Griffin, Georgia that manufactures welded, bolted, and compression fittings and connectors mainly for the power industry. Since 1971 they have been supplying their customers throughout the USA and Canada with power connectors and related fittings with short lead-times, often involving unexpected custom tweaks and modifications. SEFCOR had traditionally worked with paper design blueprints (and computer-assisted design), but as their team of designers grew and became geographically dispersed, this way of working was no longer effective.

Enter hybrid online whiteboarding

SEFCOR was able to meet their rapid/flexible design challenge by adopting hybrid working technologies powered by FlatFrog. For their office, the SEFCOR team adopted an 86-inch InGlass™ display whiteboard from Dell featuring dry-erase board-like functionality and ease-of-use. The Dell display came with an online whiteboarding app from FlatFrog, which could be installed on the team’s smart devices (or accessed on the web) and link with the physical display in the office securely and in real-time. This immediately enabled the possibility of flexible designing (with multiple/collaborative inputs and fast revisions). It also immediately enabled Hybrid working, namely the possibility of having some members working around the physical board in the main office and others joining in from home or another remote location.

A fast and adaptable solution to SEFCOR’s design dilemma

With no training necessary, new users discovered they could pick up the InGlass™ pen and import and start marking on existing drawings in the office. Blueprints are now easily imported to the FlatFrog whiteboard app and adding text and digital sticky notes through the app is simple. Changes made via the app transform the display content in real time (and vice versa) while keeping all content digitally secure. Digitizing the workflow has proven to be a big win for this hybrid-working team, with some of its members in the office and some working remotely using the FlatFrog online whiteboard. It has even enabled the possibility of real-time customer consultation, design input and feedback.

Try the FlatFrog online whiteboard for collaborative designing (it’s free) to evaluate whether it might need your organization’s design needs. We will be happy to give you a demo of hybrid working using the physical display and online app, and to discuss your specific needs.
